Live Sound and Show Production Students at work on the rooftop of the Wyman Building

Over the past two terms, students from the Live Sound And Show Production (LSSP) program have been producing a concert series on the rooftop of the Wyman Building. We have provided full live sound services for the advertising firm of “Colle + McVoy,” showcasing the bands Strange Names, Candid Kid, and William Within.

Students have packed up much of the system from IPR’s Live Lab, and along with their own personal equipment, have assembled a complete sound system. They then pushed our gear down 1st Avenue to our neighbors in the Wyman Building, schlepped it up to the rooftop and built a small concert site. By acquiring stage plots and input lists from the bands, the students have put together a very successful concert series. The entire concert series was recorded live into Pro Tools, and later mixed down by the students.

We have done this for the experience, but also as a part of a “good neighbor” policy. It was intended to only be two shows, but with the great response from the employees at Colle + McVoy and trouble free deployment, a third concert was added. We have dealt with excessive heat, rain, wind, and cold – all of the lovely variables that follow an outdoor concert site. We even watched a building fire from our rooftop view! The shows always started on time and all the bands were ecstatic with the results. It has been another one of those real-world, applied learning experiences available to those who venture into the LSSP program – or any program at IPR. We are looking forward to next season to continue this relationship with Colle + McVoy and the opportunity to do what we love to do.

Out of the blue our contact at Colle + McVoy, Ben Muller, stopped by the school with Target gift cards for those students that made it happen, so our “good neighbor” efforts did not go unnoticed! As the program chair, I could not be more proud of those involved.
